Peter is the son of migrant parents and grew up in an inner city housing commission in Melbourne.
Meet Peter
Who am I?
I’m Peter Khalil, your Federal Labor Member for Wills. I live in Melbournes north, have raised my family in Pascoe Vale and Brunswick and I have been honoured to represent you in the Australian Parliament since I was first elected in 2016.
When my parents migrated to Australia they worked hard to give us a better life. Growing up, we benefited from the opportunities Labor governments provided for us, so I am always a fierce advocate for equity – for a fair go for all.
My parents instilled in me the importance of giving something back to the country that has given so much to our family.
That’s why I ran for Parliament; to serve our country, our community and to work for you.
From my time as a foreign policy adviser to former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, to my work at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and service to the Department of Defence, I have dedicated my career to working in foreign affairs for Australia’s prosperity and national security.
Before my election to Parliament, I was also a Victorian Multicultural Commissioner promoting our cultural diversity and I worked as an Executive Director at SBS.
I am committed to real action that delivers for our community and our country:
- real action on the housing crisis to ensure all Australians have roofs over their heads
- real action to ease the cost of living pressures Australians are facing
- real action on climate change and renewable energy
