Peter Khalil, Member for Wills, was today in Fitzroy North to announce a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will deliver $3.7 million towards a re-imagined and revitalised Linear Parklands.

The Albanese Labor Government is building Australia’s future, including right here in Victoria.

This election commitment will fund the “Play Plateau” Sports and Play Precinct within Yarra City Council’s Masterplan for the Parklands. This will see existing play facilities upgraded to allow for all abilities play, whilst expanding the active sports offering to include a half basketball/volleyball court, table tennis tables, chess tables, Bocce and bouldering space.

Amenities for the Parklands will also be upgraded to provide better weather protection for year-round use of the space and increased accessibility for all users, as well as enhancing climate resilience through increasing bushland conservation zones and support for local wildlife and habitats.

This commitment builds upon the Albanese Labor Government’s track record for protecting and enhancing Parklands and Creeks within Wills, with federally-funded works to revitalise Moonee Ponds and Merri Creek ongoing.

Consistent with past practice, election commitments will be delivered in line with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.

Quotes attributable to Peter Khalil MP

“This $3.7 million commitment from the Albanese Labor Government will ensure Linear Parklands is a welcoming and accessible space for future generations of families in Melbourne’s north.

“This commitment reflects the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung connection to Country, and will importantly preserve the natural habitats and wildlife of the Parklands, integrating play and meeting spaces into the existing environment.

“This announcement wouldn’t have been possible without the advocacy of local community members who love these Parklands, and want to see them preserved for generations to come. With the Parklands recently coming into the Wills boundaries, it has been fantastic to work alongside Yarra City Council and the local community to secure this commitment.”
